My bindings are wood, not plastic. Like the sides, they are bent by hand over a 400 degree hot bending iron to fit the shape of the guitar. Bindings can be made with cocobolo, ebony, maple, koa, or walnut. Bindings can be with or without a white-black-white trim.
For purflings, I like either a classic herringbone design or a strip of abalone.
My favorite rosette design is a five piece segmented pentagram, made from the guitar’s excess body wood. This brings a little of the body wood to the top of the guitar. Then I ‘wrap’ it with strips of abalone.
